DIY Activated Charcoal Face Mask For Super Clear, Clean Skin
While I always thought of activated charcoal as what my ex husband took whenever he was barfing off the balcony, it also makes an awesome face mask! Charcoal is included in a lot of konjac sponges because it draws impurities out of the skin (just like it draws toxins out of the body.)
I’ve dubbed this mask the “blackhead busting blackout” mask since 1) its ingredients clarify the skin by pulling dirt from pores and thereby helping to eliminate blackheads, and 2) it’s as black as the night sky.
Or should I just say that it’s as black as charcoal (activated charcoal, to be specific), one of its main ingredients? I suppose that would make more sense.
Activated charcoal is similar to common charcoal, but is made specifically for medicinal use. To make activated charcoal, manufacturers heat common charcoal in the presence of a gas that causes the charcoal to become very porous. These pores allow activated charcoal to trap chemicals. Activated charcoal is used to treat poisonings, intestinal gas, nausea, and bile flow issues (cholestasis) during pregnancy. Activated charcoal also works wonders for the skin when applied topically: it keeps skin clear by acting as a magnet to draw dirt out of pores. It not only clears pores but also improves skin-tone by removing dry patches.
Bentonite clay also acts as a magnet to draw dirt from the pores. High-quality bentonite clay can be ingested to pull toxins from the body. When applied topically, it absorbs toxins, draws out blackheads, and kills acne-causing bacteria.
So let’s get to it!
DIY all-natural blackhead busting blackout mask:
Ingredients
- 2 capsules of activated charcoal (approximately 0.2 grams) opened and emptied. To open gelatin capsules, simply twist the two halves and gently pull them apart as in the picture below.
- 1/2 teaspoon of bentonite clay
- 1 1/2 teaspoons of water
Directions:
Mix* all of the ingredients together into a smooth paste, and spot test the mask on your cheek or underside of your wrist to make sure that you do not have any adverse reactions. Wash face with a mild cleanser and pat partially dry (so that it is not dripping wet, yet moist). Apply the mask evenly avoiding the delicate skin around your eyes and lips, and let sit until dry, about 7-10 minutes. As the mask dries, it feels tight on the skin, which can sometimes feel a little itchy (if you start to feel uncomfortable, wash the mask off). After the mask dries, wash it off, pat face gently with a clean towel, and let the skin breath or apply a mild all-natural moisturizer (I usually just apply jojoba oil to any areas that are prone to dryness).
That’s it! Easy-peasy as always.
*Be sure to stir this mixture with a plastic or wooden spoon, as both charcoal and clay pull toxins from metals. Also be sure to store your clay in a non-metal container.

I'm loving this eye cream! Look at the ingredient list first of all- absolutely fantastic skincare ingredients across the board. The cream is unscented and gentle. I have sensitive skin and had no problems with it. The caffeine does a fantastic job at removing puffiness, the retinol minimizes fine lines (and despite including retinol I reiterate that I had no sensitivity reaction to it) the hyaluronic acid grabs onto your skins moisture and makes the area feel strongly hydrated. It's extremely rich but doesn't leave you eye area feeling greasy. I let it absorb completely before putting on my makeup and have no problem with slippage or pilling. My general routine is to do all of my skincare layers first thing then go do whatever else I need to do (eat breakfast, take a wee, brush my teeth, or whatever) before putting on my makeup to give it time to settle into my skin. I've never been so glad to run out of my previous eye cream! This is going to last forever, it's a big jar and a little goes a long way. To make it last longer I recommend using something to scoop it out with besides your fingers so you avoid getting bacteria into it- a qtip works great.

It's a gentle and soothing ph balancer that leaves your skin feeling velvety soft. After using this, my skin actually doesn't even feel like it needs a moisturizer! Using it after cleansing gets any extra dirt or gunk out of pores as well as balancing the ph of your skin since most cleansers do disrupt that balance which can cause skin problems. It balances your skin's oil production striking that perfect balance. Over time it boosts collagen production and improves skin texture.
It has a light witch hazel scent, a very natural, plant like scent that if you've used witch hazel before you'll recognize. Homemade Shea Butter Lotion Sticks
Shea Butter Lotion Bar Stick Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons raw organic shea butter
- 1 tablespoon unrefined coconut oil- solid at room temp (can use extra shea butter if allergic to coconut)
- 2 teaspoons olive oil OR castor oil
- 2 teaspoons beeswax
- 20+ drops of essential oil of choice (optional) I used chamomile, geranium and orange
What to Do:
- Slowly melt all ingredients, except essential oils, down in a double boiler or sturdy glass bowl over a small pan of boiling water. (TIP: I found an old double boiler at a thrift store that I use for skin products only).
- Remove from heat and add essential oils.
- Pour into lotion bar tube.
- Let cool for several hours or overnight. I put mine in the fridge to speed the cooling process.
Note: This recipe makes enough for one 4-ounce lotion bar tube. For a firmer lotion bar stick, use more beeswax. For a smoother lotion bar stick, use less beeswax and more coconut oil or olive oil.

I have used this in a few ways. I have tried the typical rub on method and it feels great without an over powerful or lingering scent. A retinol moisturizer that DOESN'T kill my sensitive skin!

First of all, let me point out that I have sensitive skin and retinols are notorious for sometimes irritating some people's skin. I did not have this problem at all. After applying I do feel a slight tingling, but it's not painful, it's actually somewhat refreshing! I saw an immediate superficial difference on my first application; my pores were tightened as was my skin in general.

In the morning my skin has a glow after absorbing this overnight. I've been using this over a serum and alternating using this under my eyes with an eye cream. After about 3 weeks use, I'm seeing a vast improvement in my skin's texture and evenness and the fine lines are really lessening across the board. My skin feels soft and plump and looks good even without makeup. The circles under my eyes are diminishing and tightening. To get the best out of this stuff, make sure sure your skin is super clean and exfoliated to really absorb the benefits, though this will help with exfoliating and getting rid of dead cells. You can also use this on areas that you feel need a youth treatment, like gnarly old lady hands! (guilty as charged!) I also recommend applying this to your neck and chest for an even look from your face down. These oft neglected areas are actually the worst for showing our age, so treat them well!
