The Scary Things That Happen When You Sleep in Makeup (and why I recommend a konjac sponge)

Even though we know it's a skin “no,” we’ve all gone to bed without removing our makeup from time to time. A survey from the UK found that a third of women go to sleep at least twice a week without giving their face a good cleanse. And when we asked our readers, 75 percent of them admitted they’ve done it too.

But what would happen if we stopped taking our makeup off before bed all-together? Thanks to Daily Mail reporter Anna Pursglove, we now know and the details are gruesome!

Over a 30-day period, Pursglove abstained from washing her face and just reapplied makeup over top, which caused some very ugly things to happen. Her skin became extremely dry and sensitive, her eyelashes fell out in clumps, and not only were her pores clogged but they grew by 5 percent. Even worse, Pursglove’s eyes became swollen and she developed something she coined as “eyelash dandruff”.

“It’s bad to sleep with your makeup on because [it] can clog your pores and break you out,” says Montclair, NJ, dermatologist Jeanine Downie, MD, ”In addition, if you sleep with a lot of makeup on it has been known to cause different types of eye infections.” Dr. Downie has had a few patients scratch their cornea after rubbing their eyes in the middle of the night with mascara on.

Pursglove also noticed that the wrinkles on the sides of her face had gotten significantly worse. One explanation could be that some makeup, especially ones that are talc-based, can dry out skin. “Dryness accentuates the appearance of fine lines and pores, giving the skin an aged appearance,” says San Antonio dermatologist Vivian Bucay, MD. It’s also important to note that some makeup products can contain toxic ingredients like lead and mercury - leaving those on your skin for long periods can be especially hazardous.

At the end of her experiment, experts estimated that Pursglove had aged her skin by a decade. Luckily, she didn’t do any lasting damage in her month-long trial, but this serves as a scary reminder of why leaving that “little” bit of makeup on is a terrible idea.


Don’t feel like you have time to remove all your makeup? A makeup remover wipe is better than nothing. Of course using a cleanser and water is the best method but you can actually remove your makeup in less than a minute with this technique if you’re in a pinch. When looking for a makeup remover wipe, get one that is described as gentle, safe, hypoallergenic, ophthalmologist-tested, dermatologist-tested and/or fragrance-free, says Dr. Bucay. 

Myself, I hardcore recommend a konjac sponge. If you've never used a konjac sponge, you need to know that they are THE BOMB. It blows my mind that something that is basically a perfectly shaped piece of vegetable root could be the best face cleanser ever. You will be amazed at how smooth, bright and exfoliated your skin is using these and after about a week of regular use your pores will become absolutely tiny. No special sauce needed, just this sponge and some water. If you still want to use cleanser with it, you just need a drop as the sponge will make it foam up like nobody's business.

You have NO EXCUSE now not to wash your face before bed because this is about as low maintenance as it gets. Get it wet. Rub it on your face. Go to bed. Boom. Done. It even gets off makeup and it's naturally ph balanced to keep your skin gorgeous without needing toner. Plus, it doesn't dry out your skin like so many cleanser can. The charcoal in it does extra pore cleansing and tightening and is ideal for blemish prone skin.

On top of everything, I LOVE the size of this one- I've gotten these in so many sizes and shapes, but this is easily the largest sized one I've gotten, making it easy to hold. I'm impressed that they have so many varieties available as well, I've only ever tried the white ones and the charcoal ones- I'd be interested to see the difference.

Neem Oil is a Jack Of All Trades

I've been using this one from Oleavine, the bottle is huge and it's inexpensive with the bonus of being organic and wildcrafted. 

Tips on how to use and dilute Neem oil 

I've listed some recipes / ways to use Neem oil below - but a rule of thumb to remember is to keep your dilution of of Neem oil to about 2 - 5% of any mixture that you apply directly onto your skin. Some of the recipes below use higher percentages - but keep a lookout for any skin irritation.

• Cuts, wounds, minor skin disorders and mosquito and insect repellant
  • Mix with Vaseline or a carrier oil in a ratio of 1:5 and apply to affected area.
• Athlete’s foot
  • Add 15 ml to warm water and soak the feet in this preparation.
• Head lice
  • Mix 50/50 with a carrier oil and massage into the hair and scalp. Leave on for 1 hour and shampoo. Repeat once weekly for 3 weeks or as long as the problem persists.
• Stop mosquitoes breeding
  • Spray or pour oil on all breeding areas. The oil can be emulsified (to mix with water) by adding normal dish washing liquid to it.
• Plant protection
  • Add 30 ml to 1 liter of water and add 1 ml of dishwashing liquid. Mix well and spray immediately for plant protection. Do not store the mixture; make fresh formulation for each spray. Spray the mixture on top of all the leaves and on the undersides where insects often hide – you can also spray it around the roots.
• Lamp oil to ward off mosquitoes
  • Add 5 – 10% oil to any lamp oil and burn lamp normally.
• Dandruff and itchy scalp
  • Add a few drops to your regular shampoo.
• Ticks and fleas on animals
  • Add a few drops to your normal pet shampoo (ratio should be 30 ml (1 oz.) to 240 ml (8 oz.) shampoo). (Personally we have found that plain baby shampoo works the best.
• Warts
  • Apply 1 drop of undiluted oil directly on warts once per day. Watch carefully for any possible irritation, and should that occur discontinue use. Continue for 2-3 weeks.
• Psoriasis, cold sores, eczema, athletes foot, skin ulcers and other fungal skin conditions
  • Mix 1 tablespoon (15 ml) with 4 ounces (120 ml) carrier oil such as jojoba or grape seed oil and apply twice a day to affected skin. Should skin irritation occur, discontinue use, or make mixture with less Neem oil.
• Pet and livestock spray for ticks, fleas, mange mites and other pests
  • Mix 1 ounce (30 ml) oil with 1 gallon (3.8 liter) water and add a few drops of dishwashing liquid (to emulsify the oil). Place mixture into a spray bottle or other type of sprayer, and spray animals once every two weeks. (This mixture can be used on indoor and outdoor plants as well as flowers and vegetables.)
• Cleaning the house
  • Add to carpet shampoos and spray mattresses to kill dust mites.
• Hand wash
  • Add a couple of drops to liquid hand soap for antibacterial properties.
• FOR ALL THE ABOVE
  • As Neem oil has a rather strong smell you might want to add a few drops of your essential oil to any mixture to mask the smell. Lavender or lemongrass essential oils work well – but you could add your personal favorite.

i was really impressed by these brushes, I assumed that for the price they'd be merely serviceable, but instead they are GREAT! These have become my go to daily brushes. They have a good hand feel with a good heft and are sturdily made. They don't shed and are super soft. They're dense so you get a good amount on your brush and they hold onto powders, even my mineral shadows don't have much fallout with these. The ferrule isn't poking out like on some cheap brushes, I've paid this much for a single brush that wasn't this well made. Seriously, even at double the cost these would be a steal.
