Violentally Expensive-Crazy Worth It

A few years ago, dynamic husband and wife duo Erica and David Chung were on a quest for the ultimate in effective high-end skincare products. They developed 3LAB, a perfectionist's anti-aging skincare collection. By working with leading chemists and dermatologists, the long term beauty industry professionals tested and refined their products until they created innovate "miracle" products that use state-of-the-art technology-- such as apple stem cells-- to remedy wrinkles and loss of elasticity. Having made a serious impression in luxury retail spaces worldwide, it’s no wonder celeb fans include forever-young Kristin Chenoweth, Olivia Wilde and Kelly Ripa. Take some of the products for a spin and see much more even complexions, and younger, healthier looking skin — fast.

Clean, Moist, and Good To Go

I have fallen in love with Phyto's Phyto 7 Creme de Jour. It's supposedly for dry hair, which I most certainly don't have- but using a dollop of this in my hair after towel drying (shampoo only, no conditioner) my hair feels so soft and shiny and bouncy that I feel like a commercial. On my fine hair it turns it into a sheet of silk and I can't quit petting myself. Methinks they need to reevaluate how they market this stuff! I first started using it in the winter when I was getting flyaways, but I've discovered that it is actually less heavy than a standard conditioner for summer use as well. It's full of plant based extracts that are great for your tresses- calendula (one of my favorite plant extracts for just about EVERYTHING) sage, burdock, willow, soybean, rosemary and althea. It also smoothes out split ends like nobody's business. A teeny bit is all you need, so it will last you FOREVAH. YAY! Happy hair!
Available at Ulta, where right now they have an awesome sale going on!

I was in bed bed sick with a horrible stomach virus for about a week just before I had my smash up, and then I was once more out of commission. Needless to say, despite my best efforts, my skincare routine had gotten a little spotty. This led to ME being a little spotty. No big giant terrifying zits or anything, just some routine blackheads and a few places that were looking a bit suspicious. I decided to nip this in the bud and pulled out SensiClear's Purifying Cleanser. It's a gel, so it rinses off really easily (a bonus with your arm in a sling) and despite being very gentle, my face feels as if all of the day's goo is gone and my skin feels light and refreshed. The Lancome Toner Test (where I swipe a soaked cotton ball with the world's best toner over my face after cleansing) showed that this cleanser didn't miss a thing. The cotton ball was snow white. GOOD JOB! I have a friend who totally jacked up her skin in a blackhead freak out, and I'm going to FORCE her to buy a tube of this stuff to prevent future psychotic episodes :-)
And it's CRAZY cheap too!

Not so crazy cheap is the serum I used afterwards. Borghese Insta Firm Platinum is a face lift in a bottle.
You apply it to the areas that get the "action wrinkles" - laugh lines, around the eyes, and what I call my forehead squiggles from my constant brow furrowing. Don't use it on your entire face, it'd be a waste- just where you're worried about wrinklies. I saw a small difference instantly, but after 4 weeks of use I had actually had a specific wrinkle I was targeting totally disappear! It was freaky! (Yes, I really do do bizarre self inflicted experiments like this. All in the name of science....)
Available at Dermstore, Free Gift with Purchase

Since I have been trying to keep my skin oil free, I'm loving Peter Thomas Roth Oil Free Moisturizer. It's a gel and absorbs really quickly, leaving the skin feeling hydrated without that heavy feeling. Perfect for daytime use, especially in Texas heat and humidity. This is perfect under a mineral foundation, because it doesn't make the powders clot or clump up. I don't feel like I have to wait for it to absorb before I apply my makeup- it sinks right in. If you have extremely dry skin this IS NOT the one for you- this is designed for oily skin or normal/combo skin during the humid months. I don't see myself using this in the winter. I also only use this as a daytime moisturizer, since nighttime is my fight signs of aging with a Glock time. Also available at Dermstore, including FREE shipping.
I recently used up my eye cream and started using  Dr Dennis Gross MD Skincare Continuous Eye Hydration. I REALLY like it! I saw some reviews on Sephora that made me reluctant to give it a shot, but I can only surmise that they were using it wrong or something (though how you use eye cream wrong, I don't know....) I saw folks saying it pilled up when they put their makeup on over it, but I haven't had a problem- I think they were just being Quick Draw Mcgraw and not letting it absorb properly first. It makes my eyes feel plump and perky (well, the area around my eyes- not my actual eyeballs. That would just be weird.)

Since I'm going makeup free today, the last thing I put on is pur-Lisse Pur Lip Comfort. I was first introduced to this from Beauty Fix and it's supposedly the lip balm to the stars. It's referred to as a "daily lip nourisher" which is pretty darn accurate. more than a regular balm, this actually penetrates and heals the skin, leaving it soft and supple. Perfect for healing chapped lips, and it contains ingredients that neutralize the free radicals that attack our often sun protection neglected lips. It also makes an awesome lip primer for use under gloss or lipstick! I love a multi-tasker :-)
Also available at Dermstore with their standard free shipping and free presents.

HERE IS YOUR INVITE
to join Just Fabulous, who now not only has shoes, but fabulous purses as well. If you don't know about them, they're a membership club where you rate different things for how they appeal to you and then once a month they stock your personal boutique with choices based on your style preferences. If you don't like what you see, you simply answer a few questions and they send you a new batch of choices. You can choose as many items as you wish (or as few- you can always skip that month). They show photos of celebrities wearing each style, have multiple angle photos and a video of someone walking in them so you can see how they move.

A new feature is that you get points for every time you make a purchase, and once you get enough points your choice for that month is free! Sweet!
I had enough points to cash in for an extra selection, so I decided to check out their purses. The one I got was of SUPERB quality, and I'm getting TONS of compliments on it!

The shoes must be pretty darn well made too, since my shoe selection that I was wearing when I had my bike wreck came out totally unscathed :-)

Droppin' Science W/ Donya- Cosmetics Safety & Stinky Pits

Last week was a busy week in the world of cosmetics and personal care products! It started with the introduction in Congress of a new bill: The Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010. This ground-breaking legislation proposes an overhaul of the federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, giving the FDA the authority and resources it needs to ensure that cosmetics and personal care products do not contain ingredients linked to adverse health effects.

Coinciding with the introduction of this legislation, the Safe Cosmetics Campaign (who was instrumental in pushing this through) released a new video called "The Story of Cosmetics" --a sequel of sorts to Annie Leonard's 2007 widely viewed and critically acclaimed video "The Story of Stuff." This is a clever animated video that, like its predecessor, attempts to spell out in the simplest possible way the problems inherent with the status quo --in this case: the way cosmetics manufacturers make products. As you can probably imagine, it's already rankled the cosmetics industry! I highly recommend it and you can view it at The Aroma Zone blog. If this is a subject you want to know more about, I'll be blogging about it in the coming weeks so tune in to the Aroma Zone.

Much of the work done by the Safe Cosmetics Campaign is based on something called the precautionary principle, which basically encapsulates the essence of the phrase "better safe than sorry." In other words, if there's no scientific consensus that an action or policy suspected of being harmful to people or the environment is not harmful, the burden lies with those who want to carry it out to prove otherwise.

This week's article takes a look at a sticky and somewhat personal subject that for me certainly invokes the precautionary principle: antiperspirants and deodorants. We try to cover what you should know to help you choose the safest options for your needs.

Yours in health and prosperity,

Donya

At the Risk of Staying Fresh & Dry: Using Antiperspirants vs. Deodorants

As part of our daily routine, most of us reach for some form of antiperspirant or deodorant in an attempt to either control or eliminate the unpleasant body odors that can arise when we sweat. This need, like so many of the ones that dictate our personal hygiene habits, probably stems from early advertising campaigns designed to sell a related product. So effective were these campaigns in establishing our cultural distaste for body odor, that every day 95% of Americans over the age of 12 reach for a deodorant or antiperspirant to help address their insecurities about the way they smell. In 2006, U.S. sales for this category of product reached a staggering $2.5 billion!

Just when you thought you had this issue sewn up tight, comes the speculation and growing concern as to whether deodorants and antiperspirants are harmful or even a possible cause of cancer. These concerns arise mainly from the use of antiperspirants which all contain an aluminum-based compound as their main ingredient. The most commonly used of these active ingredients are aluminum chloride, aluminum zirconium tricholorohydrex glycine, aluminum chlorohydrate and aluminum hydroxybromide --sometimes referred to as aluminum salts.

The link between aluminum and Alzheimer's Disease aside, the aluminum found in antiperspirants has been shown to cause DNA mutation --a pre-cursor for uncontrolled growth of cells, and hence cancer. It has also been found to have estrogen-like effects when frequently placed on and absorbed into the skin. The latter finding has led some scientists to believe that using antiperspirants may be linked to breast cancer.

Equally alarming is the finding that aluminum can be fatal in large enough doses to people with impaired kidney function, causing some antiperspirant manufacturers to place warnings on their product labels.

Up until now none of these research findings have been conclusive, but questions still remain about the safety of underarm products. This has given rise to new, healthier alternatives, but its not clear if these products are entirely safe either. So how do you know what product is the best product for your needs?

The basic difference between antiperspirants and deodorants is that the former keep you from sweating, while the latter cut down on what makes you stink when you sweat. Understanding the difference between the two, and the pros and cons of each is the key to identifying the safest and most effective options out there.

Survival Instinct: Sweating Does a Body Good

It helps to understand why and how we sweat in the first place. Sweating is your body's natural way of cooling itself off --whether that extra heat comes from hardworking muscles (the result of exercise or over-exertion), from over stimulated nerves (being nervous), or from the burning of food via the body's metabolic processes. When sweat evaporates from the surface of your skin, it removes excess heat and cools you. So even though sweating can sometimes be embarrassing, it's a natural bodily function that regulates and maintains the body's normal temperature, which is crucial to our survival.

The average person has 2.6 million sweat glands in their skin. There are two different types of sweat glands in our underarms, apocrine and eccrine. The eccrine glands are by far the most numerous and produce most of the sweat in our underarms, as well as other areas, including the forehead, palms of the hands, and soles of the feet.

For the most part, human perspiration has no smell until fermented by bacteria, which thrive in hot, humid and acid pH environments like your armpits. The apocrine glands are responsible for making you stink. That's because the sweat they produce contains fats and proteins from within your body that are carried to the exterior surface of your skin where they react with bacteria that live under your arms --creating odors.

Antiperspirants vs. Deodorants: What's the Difference?

Deodorants target the bacteria that hang around your armpits by making the skin there too salty or acidic (low pH) for bacteria to live in. No bacteria, means no smell. Most deodorants use alcohol to accomplish this and many use synthetic fragrances (which have their own inherent safety issues) to mask whatever smell is not fully eliminated by the other active ingredients.

Antiperspirants do the job using the exact opposite principle: they actually keep you from sweating by plugging the ducts that carry sweat from the glands to the skin's surface. Without any sweat, the bacteria in your underarms don't have anything to feast upon. Most antiperspirants have some of the same ingredients found in deodorants that kill bacteria as a failsafe. Their main function, however, is to keep you from perspiring, and alas, this only works for a short time before you have to re-apply it.

Ironically, antiperspirants are designed to decrease the production of eccrine sweat, which has no odor and therefore no substances for bacteria to thrive on. And neither antiperspirants nor deodorants can decrease apocrine sweat. This begs the question of which product is safer? While both types of products can be seen as interfering with our body's naturally occurring processes, antiperspirants are clearly more disruptive as they are intended to stop you from sweating altogether and sweating is necessary for regulating body temperature. If body odor is your main concern, then deodorants are a more appropriate choice.

Safer, Natural Alternatives to Help You Stay Fresh and Dry

Knowing that the primary action of a deodorant is to either kill the bacteria in your armpits or turn the armpits into a hostile environment for bacteria, you can focus your efforts on finding or making a natural deodorant with ingredients that will do the job without posing the risk of harm.

The good news is there are plant-based and natural ingredients that can produce both deodorizing and (to a limited extent) antiperspirant effects. Some of these include:
Tea Tree essential oil (antibacterial)
Sage essential oil, sage tea or other form of sage extract (astringent --helps inhibit sweat production)
Witch Hazel extract (astringent and antibacterial)
Goldenseal extract (astringent and antibacterial)
Baking Soda (adsorbent and antibacterial)
Cornstarch (adsorbent)
Arrowroot powder (adsorbent)
Kaolin or Bentonite Clay powder (adsorbent)
Apple Cider Vinegar (antibacterial -lowers pH of the skin)
Other ingredients that are safe to use as fillers or binders include aloe vera and vegetable glycerin (for roll-ons), coconut oil, shea butter, and beeswax (for solids), and additional essential oils for fragrance. If you're making your own deodorant powder you can grind fragrant herbs like lavender buds, lemon verbena, or rose petals in a coffee grinder and mix them in with your other powders. Stay away from any form of Talc or Talcum Powder as this can be toxic to your lungs when inhaled!

Last but not least are natural deodorants made from potassium alum or ammonium alum. Not to be confused with metal aluminum this alum is a compound found in alum salts and used to make solid crystal deodorants -a popular natural alternative. Crystal deodorants leave a layer of natural crystal salts on the surface of the skin producing a hostile environment for bacteria, and have been used as a deodorant throughout history in Thailand, the Far East, Mexico and several other countries.

Using mass-market antiperspirants and deodorants may seem like a simple and innocuous thing to do to assuage your fears about the way you smell. But knowing the facts will help you identify the safest and most effective options to meet your needs. Choose wisely ...

Ferro Cosmetics- Be Eco Gorgeous!

One of the biggest complaints I hear about mineral veils is that many people don't like the shimmer that accompanies so many of them. For those, Ferro's Matte Veil is the answer to their prayers. I have it in nude, and it truly is a matte. It has excellent staying power and keeps your makeup fresh all day, whether used as a primer beneath your mineral foundation to lessen the apperance of pores, or as a touch up to absorb oil as the day wears on. I love that it doesn't become cakey or look piled on- you simply have fresh, clean looking skin.

While they do not make sunscreen claims (for which you have to go through the FDA) it does contain titanium dioxide, so it does act as a sunsceen.

"Ultra-fine mineral veil in pale beige naturally reflects light and conceals acne, dark spots and under-eye circles for fresh, luminous skin. Tinted with pale beige minerals for a fresh, neutral glow."

Another Ferro fave is their Winter Kiss Glow Bronzer.A lot of bronzers look downright creepy on me because I'm such a pale kemosabe, but a lil dab of this on the apples of my cheeks and I just look healthy and vibrant. It's the perfect alternative to standard blushers for a natural, yet glowing look. While they talk about it warming up pale winter skin, for someone who's ghostly year round like me, this is the perfect shade.

"Add warmth to the crispness that is winter with a spectacular peachy-colored mineral bronzer.  Skin kissed in a peachy glow brings warmth during the doldrums of winter."

I've used a lot of mineral foundations, and I have to say that their Ultimate Foundation is one of the best I've ever used (and I mean that to include the big department store brands!) I have it in Fairest Honey, which blends in so perfectly with my skin that it looks totally natural. It's light enough to match my skintone without looking pasty or mask like. What I really adore about it though is that it's so finely spun that it doesn't cake up or need any blending and it doesn't creep into pores or fine lines.
One of the great things about Ferro is that you can order a foundation starter kit. It includes 3 Ultimate Mineral Foundation and 3 Radiance Foundation Mini’s in your skin tone. Includes makeup brush, application sponge, directions for finding and customizing your right shade, and a $5 Coupon towards your full size purchase. The minis are actually a good size too, so you really can spend some time playing with them and testing them out.

Now something I really think makes them a cut above so many mineral makeup lines is their Eye Candy. They have tOhem in mattes, pearls, shimmers, and the awesome 3-in-ones!

Their bestselling shade is the fabulous Dirt, which is one of the 3-in-one shades. It can be used as a shadow, an eyeliner and a brow definer and is easy to take from very soft to intense depending on your level of layering. I love to apply this as a liner, because it doesn't crease or fade and is a magnificent compliment to almost any color of shadow. It's a cool toned deep matte brown, but it has green mica flecks that add an unexpected extra depth. It blends fabulously with almost any highlighting shade, and like their other products, is finely milled for smooth application.

In their Pearl Eye Candy line, I have Come Hither, which is a lovely pearl shimmer. This is the one for those who want a little extra pizazz above a matte shade but don't want the full on glitter effect. Come Hither is an extremely subtle peachy nude, providing the perfect bit of highlight and blending beautifully with bolder colors. This one is also great for toning down colors that got applied too heavily or for adding shimmer to a matte shade without altering the color itself too drastically.
Ferro Cosmetics is the brainchild of Krissy Ferro, who is a delightful woman. She helped me to pick out the best shades for my skintone and made great recommendations for me, which I truly appreciate.

About Ferro Cosmetics from Krissy herself:
"An advocate of natural skincare products, I soon became unsatisfied with trendy brands and their mineral counterparts. It was difficult finding mineral makeup that was truly all natural and toxin-free. And when I found products that met those qualifications, I grew discontent with the lack of colors, overly shiny and dull finishes and mediocre results. Thus the seedling of Ferro Cosmetics was planted. Our wide selection offers a little bit of everything for every woman. Besides our continued effort to present you with a dazzling array of colors, we also offer several finishes that best suit your skin type.
A single mother of two rambunctious boys (ages 3 and 6) and business owner, I understand the time-restraints we face as women. Whether you have four or 20 minutes to spare for your daily beauty regimen, Ferro Cosmetics offers all natural, non-toxic mineral makeup and tools to achieve that desired flawless look. After years of research and trial-and-errors, we offer an unrivaled selection for everyone - from the supermom juggling a busy career and children to the ferocious trendsetter who is always experimenting with her look. Mature women enjoy their youthful glow with our age-defying products, while women with darker pigments have wider selection of products that won't leave their skin looking ashy. By matching our customer's exterior to her interior, we can reflect just how fabulous she truly is."

YAY! I can wear makeup again!

I am soooooo happy to finally be able to start playing with my toys again! While I'm still wearing my eye patch part time and dark tinted glasses to protect my eye sensitivity, I am able to conceal what's left of my facial injuries without looking like a hooker who's been beat up by her pimp!

Today I did stick to mostly mineral makeup, since my skin is still very sensitive, but so far so good!

I pulled out a couple of trusty standbys, i.d. Bare Minerals.

I do wish they made the holes in their sifter tops smaller so they weren't as messy. If you don't do some major brush tapping before application you'll get it EVERYWHERE. And if it gets on your clothes...... arrrghhhh

Instyways......
With my Ferro Dirt Eye Candy (see separate review to follow) I used the bareMinerals Glimmer in Trust, which is a lovely but very deceitful color. In the pot it looks like a shimmery lavender, but when you apply it, it actually has tons of GOLD sparkle! You read that right- lavender to gold. It's incredibly shimmery and applied near the browline really opens up the eyes. I could see this being absolutely stunning on hazel eyes. If you do a wet application, it becomes intense without being garish. It may seem like an odd color twist, but it's a perfect complement to my colors today, as I'm wearing an olive top and pink lips. This ties everything together with a unique twist.

Another one of their products I'm wearing to tie my color scheme together is their blush in Compassion. It's a deep cranberry that would normally be a bit strong for the daytime, but if applied with a light hand along the cheekbones gives excellent definition. I still have one very poofy cheek, so it's creating the illusion that my cheekbones are actually even. You really do have to make sure you tap this one off first though, you don't want to look like you're auditioning to be on Dynasty!

To line my eyes I used Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On eye pencil in Stash. I needed something that went on with absolutely NO tugging whatsoever and would be gentle to my still sensitive eye area. This liner is so close to perfect that it seems almost blasphemous. (so all is forgiven for the Demattifier situation, UD!) Stash is a gorgeous metallic olive green that stays on ALL day and glides on so smoothly you'd swear it wasn't even touching your skin. Even though it's waterproof, it comes off easy as 123 with cleanser.
Available at Ulta where you get 3 FREE Samples with EVERY Order

To tie it all together I wanted a cheery pink for my lips and put on N.Y.C. (New York Color) lipstick in Blossom. I originally bought this for camping, since I always buy 3 tubes of cheap lipstick to take with me- one red, one pink, one brown. I had never used this drugstore cheapie before and I LOVED the color so I gave it a shot. I will say it's wonderfully moisturizing, but the color disappears in a heartbeart. My guess is that it's got a lot of mineral oil in it. Awesome color, but I won't be getting this brand again.
Normally I don't work a full shift on fridays, but I'm covering for a co-worker today so I wanted to prepare myself. That's where my Avon Aromatherapy fragrance spray in Peaceful Sandalwood comes in. Once again, a discontinued fragrance, but worth hunting down online and easy to find on Ebay. Their aromatherapy line came in metal spray bottles, so the scent has stayed completely true and is still divine. It's a very creamy sandalwood and true to it's name, a deeply peaceful, contemplative scent. It's yoga in a bottle!
